From Trash to Treasure: Restoring a 1961 Lane Cedar Chest

There’s something deeply satisfying about giving forgotten furniture a second chance. When I stumbled across this 1961 Lane Cedar Chest tossed out with the trash, most people would’ve kept walking. It was battered by the elements—faded, water-stained, and looking like it had seen better decades. But I saw its bones. I saw the potential.

This wasn’t just any piece—it was a solid wood Mid-Century Modern Lane chest from 1961, a true relic of timeless design. These chests were once a staple in American homes, given as “hope chests” to young women for storing linens and keepsakes. And though this one had been neglected for years, the craftsmanship was still there beneath the grime and weathering.

The Restoration Process

Bringing this beauty back to life took time, patience, and a whole lot of TLC. The first step was to completely clean and strip the exterior. Years of exposure had taken a toll, but the solid wood held up surprisingly well. I carefully sanded it down to bare wood, preserving the sharp, clean lines that define the MCM aesthetic.

For the finish, I chose a rich walnut stain to highlight the wood’s natural grain, pairing it with deep black accents to add contrast and sophistication. The original hardware—an eye-catching combo of metallic silver and geometric charm—was still intact. After a careful polish, it gleamed like new and added just the right vintage punch to the finished piece.

The Interior Surprise

Despite its rough exterior, the chest's interior was remarkably well preserved. The original cedar lining, known for its ability to naturally repel insects and absorb moisture, was still in place. After a light sanding and conditioning treatment, it looked and smelled as fresh as the day it was made.

A Piece With a Past (and a Future)

This Lane Cedar Chest is now a fully restored, functional, and absolutely gorgeous piece of history. What was once destined for the landfill is now ready to be cherished again—perfect for blankets, keepsakes, or as a striking statement piece in any room.

Restoring pieces like this isn’t just about furniture—it’s about sustainability, craftsmanship, and preserving stories from the past. And trust me, nothing compares to the feeling of watching a forgotten treasure come back to life.
